OUR STORY

Five decades of heritage & resilience.

Established in 1970, the Marines Malay Choir is a proud and historic choral institution based in Wynberg, Cape Town.

Founded by Mr. Gamiet Mohammed, Hassiem Isaacs, Ebrahim Gester, Darwies Layman, Rashied Stuurman and Yusuf Moerat, the choir began humbly at Cosy Corner, opposite Aneesa’s in Wynberg.

Under the musical direction of Mr. Eesa Mohammad, the choir's first Combine Chorus was Eens Vere Nag, followed by the first Comic Song, Dadoer Op Die Plaas Staan Die Deure En Maak Geraas, and the first Nederlands, Een Sorg Kwel.

The choir's lead singer won first prize in the Nederlands category for 11 consecutive years, a proud milestone in the Marines legacy.

Throughout its history, MMC has won the prestigious Silver Fez Trophy twice and placed in the Top 8 three times.
