Our Story
Established in 1970, the Marines Malay Choir is a proud and historic choral institution based in Wynberg, Cape Town. Founded by a group of passionate visionaries — Mr. Gamiet Mohammed, Hassiem Isaacs, Ebrahim Gester, Darwies Layman, Rashied Stuurman, and Yusuf Moerat — the choir was built on the enduring values of unity, discipline, and community pride.
The journey began humbly at Cosy Corner, opposite Aneesa’s in Wynberg, which served as both a gathering place and the birthplace of the Marines legacy. From these modest beginnings, the founders laid the foundation for what would become one of the most respected and enduring Malay Choirs in Cape Town — a club that has continued to grow and evolve for more than five and a half decades.
Under the musical direction of Mr. Eesa Mohammad, the choir’s very first Combine Chorus was titled Eens Vere Nag, followed by the first Comic Song, Dadoer Op Die Plaas Staan Die Deure En Maak Geraas, and the first Nederlands, Een Sorg Kwel. Demonstrating exceptional musical excellence and consistency, the choir’s lead singer won first prize in the Nederlands category for an extraordinary 11 consecutive years, a record that remains a proud milestone in the Marines’ history.
Beyond competition and performance, the Marines Malay Choir has long served as a pillar of hope, mentorship, and development within the community. Through music, discipline, and teamwork, the choir has uplifted generations of youth, fostering positive values and steering many away from social challenges.
Throughout its proud history, the Marines Malay Choir has achieved numerous high honours, including winning the prestigious Silver Fez Trophy on two occasions and placing in the Top 8 on three occasions. These achievements reflect not only musical excellence but also the unwavering spirit, resilience, and brotherhood that define the Marines family.
Today, the Marines Malay Choir stands as a beacon of tradition, resilience, and unity, continuing to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Cape Malay Choir movement for generations to come.
